He’s says it’s best to wait until Jory comes out of the wilderness. Tunner sends Janet home and he and Goodwin go see Sheriff Brown. When he comes to his faithful wife Janet (Polly Bergen) is in his room. When he comes to Tunner drinks some swamp water. He gets away when Ella crowns Tunner with a bottle. Ella brings in the son he never knew he had. He lets him have some time with his wife Ella. Jory spots them from a boxcar and jumps into the river and gets away.

Word comes in that Jory has hopped a freight. When he gets there he meets Sheriff Brown who thinks a bullet is the only thing that will stop Jory.

Keeley figures he’s headed back home to the Louisiana Bayou and assigns Tunner to go get him. The driver isn’t paying attention and slams into a car. Jory is being taken to the D.A.’s office by abusive cop Sgt.Goodwin (William Conrad). Jory gets respect for him and decides to talk. That leads to a fist fight with Tunner the winner. Tunner goes to Jory’s cell and tries again to find out some names. Sitting in solitary is Jory (Vittorio Gassman). His boss is the golf obsessed Warden Keeley. Lt.Tunner (Barry Sullivan) is the head of maximum security in a Northern prison. Decent B movie about a cop obsessed with capturing a fugitive and finding out the names of the men who hired him to drive the getaway car in a half million dollar robbery.
